Mentoring opportunity
Judy Glick-Smith, an STC Fellow and Atlanta chapter member, is recruiting technical communicators in Georgia to be mentors in the Technology Association of Georgia Education Collaborative’s (TAGEC) Live and eLearn WebChallenge 2010.
TAGEC is once again challenging high-school students to work in a team environment to develop a web-based application that makes a difference in their community. Last year’s winning students earned $21,000 in college scholarships and their schools received extensive recognition statewide. The students learned teamwork skills and gained valuable technical knowledge. TAGEC is looking for mentors from the technology community in Georgia to be available for the teams. This is the first year technical communicators have been asked to participate.
In addition to the opportunity for students to get real-world experience and exposure within the business community, this competition represents a great opportunity for technical communicators to help expand awareness of the profession. Technical communicators are needed to guide students in the importance of documenting their system development efforts, as well as make them aware of the importance of usability, user-centered design, embedded help, etc. Here is your chance to make an impact on the lives of students and contribute to Georgia’s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education goals.
Mentor training is scheduled for February 5th between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. at the Georgia Tech Research Center on 14th Street (contact Judy for more details). The competition runs from February 15-April 2. Judy would like to recruit at least 10 mentors.
Please contact Judy if you are interested in volunteering.
